Here is one website very useful, even if I’m french and I was living very close to Paris, I had the bad surprise to pay a lot to do a very short journey 2 years ago 
With Taxi Meter, I would have been aware that I will be screwed and if neither you nor the taxi driver knows the directions (I had to give the driver the directions even with his GPS…) you can have a look and advise…
The downturn, right now there is only major cities, Hong Kong is still not available; and for example in Shanghai you don’t need it, even of the driver makes three times the round of the city it will still be cheap !!!
